Bulldog Wrestlers Start Strong @ Allegheny Tournament
The Albemarle wrestling team made its season debut over Thanksgiving Weekend when they travelled to Allegheny for a tournament. The Bulldogs put together a solid day on the mats.
Nasir Goode Craig, wrestling in the 145lb weight class, and Armando Popocoa, wrestling in the 138lb weight class, each finished 4th in their season debuts. Both Armando and Nasir reached the semifinals before falling in that match as well as in the third place match, but both young men had a great start to the year.
Christian Harris, in his wrestling debut, also made a run to the semi-finals and lost there, but he won third place for the 106lb weight class. Harris is off to a nice start for a first time wrestler.
His teammate, Miles Gregory is also off to an excellent start in his first season of wrestling. He made a run all the way to the finals, eventually falling in the championship match for the Heavyweight class.
Head Coach Dustin Foley said, “I was very pleased with our effort and growth. We had guys wrestling their first match against some of the top guys in the state. We didn't back down or give up. You could see their growth from one match to the next. I am extremely excited to see what the season holds for these young men.”
The Bulldogs continue their season with a home match this Wednesday at 6pm against conference foes South Stanly and Union Academy.
