Varsity Girls win Opener @ West Stanly, JV/Varsity Boys Fall

The AHS basketball programs opened their season on the road at West Stanly last night. The JV and Varsity Boys fell by scores of 45-20 and 79-71 respectively, but the AHS Lady Bulldogs came away with a convincing 66-49 victory.

Led by the relentless defense of Amari Baldwin and Jamirica Everhardt, the Bulldogs converted turnovers into points early and often. The Bulldogs kept the pressure up the entire game, frustrating the West Stanly offense. They were able to fight through the adversity of an unbalanced charity stripe, as the Colts attempted 39 free throws to the ‘Dogs 13. The Bulldogs return home tonight for a home-opener match-up with Forest Hills, who received honorable mention in the pre-season Sweet Sixteen. Tip-Off will be 6:00pm.

The JV Bulldogs got out to an early lead but struggled to establish consistency in what was the first high school basketball action for a young squad. West Stanly was able to pull ahead to a significant lead by midway through the first half; the Bulldogs then settled in and played even basketball the rest of the way before falling by a final score of 45-20. The ‘Dogs return home for their first home game of the campaign to face off against College Prep and Leadership Academy tonight. Tip-Off will be 4:30pm.

The Varsity Boys team fought hard, chasing the Colts for most of the night. A late first quarter run cut a 19-10 deficit to 23-22 after one period, but that’s as close as the Bulldogs were able to get. The ‘Dogs made a handful of runs to get within 2 possessions multiple times in the 3rd and 4th quarters but struggles on the defensive glass led the Colts to an 8 points margin of victory, 79-71. The 'Dogs welcome College Prep and Leadership Academy at 7:30 tonight for a home-opening contest.
