Boys track wins first meet; Girls finish second.

On the day that Albemarle celebrated 2021 1A Triple Jump State Champion Ali Currie with a ring ceremony, both Albemarle’s girls and boys track teams had solid starts to the 2022 season. The girls finished second behind only Gray Stone, defeating both South Stanly & J.M. Robinson, and the boys won the meet with victories over Gray Stone, South, and J.M.

Girls Results:

The Albemarle girls scored 32 of their 54 points in sprinting events, while Gray Stone received a significant boost from the field events – jumping and throwing. In the jumps, Gray Stone claimed all but 8 points.

Abigail Clayton and Amari Baldwin turned in strong performances in sprints, with Baldwin edging Clayton with a 27.30 in the 200 to Clayton’s 29.30, and with a 13.20 in the 100 to Clayton’s 13.60. The pair of Bulldogs are sure to push each other all season long. Clayton claimed a win in the 400 with a time of 1:09 – and was followed to the finish by De’Narjeonia Robinson, who turned in a 1:16.30. Together, Clayton, Baldwin, and Robinson combined for 31 of the 32 points the Bulldogs scored in the sprints. Diamond Smith placed 5th for the Bulldogs in the 200 to round out the 32 point total.

Aryjha Baldwin and Anautica Meaders placed 1st and 4th, respectively, in the 100 meter hurdles, with times of 18.80, and 19.55. Baldwin and Meaders together accounted for 8 points in the hurdles. Diamond Smith placed 4th in the long jump with a mark of 11’1” and Kai Spencer took home first in the girls high jump with a jump of 4’6”. To round out the girls scoring, the 4x100 relay team placed first.

The Bulldogs had a strong first meet of the spring.

The boys, meanwhile, had a strong performance in jumps, hurdles, and relays, and scored points in each available category. Currie started off his title defense with a win in the Triple Jump and High Jump, as well as a 2nd place finish in the long jump. Willie Browne, Jaliq McRae, Slay Jackson, Cj Ellis, and Isaiah Jones all placed in jumping events as well.

Dre Davis and CJ Ellis combined to take first and second and 10 points in the 300 meter hurdles with times of 47.40 & 48.00 respectively. Jackson also place in the event. Vincent Gregory placed 4th in the 400 with a time of 58.30. Davis and Jaylen Pinkney took 2nd and 3rd in the 200 meter dash with times of 23.04 and 23.40. Jaylen Pinkney also took 2nd in the 100 with a time of 11.3.

Meanwhile, down on the field, Miles Gregory scored 4 points for the Bulldogs with a second place throw of 36’11”. Reyli Alvarez grabbed a point for the ‘Dogs with a 5:37 run in the 1600 and scored 3 more with a 3rd place time of 2:27 in the 800.  In the relays, the Bulldogs took first place in the 4x100 and 4x200, placed second in the 4x400, and finished third in the 4x800 to round out the scoring.

After getting rained out on Thursday, the Bulldogs next action will be at North Stanly on Thursday, March 24th.
