Ali Currie Receives State Championship Ring

Celebrating a state championship is always good. Celebrating a state championship on the very same day you kick off the pursuit of the next ring? That’s the way Ali Currie did it on Tuesday at Bulldog Stadium.

During the course of Tuesday’s meet (the results will be published soon, and we’ll share them with you when we have them), State Champion Triple Jumper Ali Currie was presented with his championship ring. “I’m in love with the ring man – definitely need another one.” Currie’s comments displayed the mindset of a champion. Proud of the championship he’d already claimed, but not content to settle for just the one. Currie has set his mind on not only defending his triple jump title — a title he claimed with a jump of 44.9 feet — but adding to it in the high jump and the long jump.

Currie’s approach as he enters his senior track season is slightly different from his approach last year – which while leading him to a state title, left him hungry for more: “Last year I was trying to see what I could do against other guys because I hadn’t had a full track season and didn’t know what all I could do. But this year I’m only competing against myself, and I’m hungry for better results than last year.”

Currie, the state champion triple jumper, is not resting content. He’s striving for more.

Already a career 1,000 point scorer for the Bulldogs on the basketball court, a mark he achieved with an authoritative dunk in front of a packed home crowd, Currie is chasing, or jumping for, more rings – and hopes to use track as a launch pad for the future. In the fall, he plans to attend NC A&T and hopes to continue his track career there – but even more importantly, Ali will have the opportunity to further his education – all the while showing off his state championship ring – and if things go as planned – he’ll have one to wear on each hand.

Ali and his Bulldog teammates return to action tomorrow afternoon at South Stanly High School at 4:30. Make the trip down to South and check out the Bulldogs!
