Week 1 Complete, Week 2 Loading
Albemarle Athletics came out of the gate with a solid start for the 2023/2024 school year.
After falling in their first matches, 4-0 to North Rowan (Soccer) and 3-0 to Anson (Volleyball), both the soccer team and the volleyball team bounced back in big ways.
The soccer team traveled south to Anson and won 9-0, ending the game early on Alex Ulloa’s 3rd goal of the night. Ulloa was one of two Bulldogs with a hat trick, as freshman Moi Carillo also added four goals in just the second game of his high school career. Javier Cisneros joined Carillo as a freshman goal scorer, adding 2 of his own. Sophomore Noah Carpenter earned his first clean sheet of the season in goal. The ‘Dogs make their home debut in Bulldog Stadium at 6:00 on Tuesday, seeking to avenge their season-opening loss to North Rowan.
Led by a wealth of returning starters, including Amari Baldwin and Kai Spencer, and joined by Bianca Robinson, the Bulldog volleyball team swept Thomasville 3-0. As the Bulldogs continue to build, it was a confidence-boosting victory. Bulldog Volleyball hits the road Wednesday, looking to make it 2 in a row over Thomasville before returning home on Thursday to take on Forest Hills.
The Junior Varsity football team earned a win over Asheboro on Thursday night in front of a good home crowd. Shoddy Pergee and Trey LeGrand had a touchdown each and the ‘Dogs defense came up with a late stand to preserve the victory. The JV ‘Dogs stay at home this week, playing host to Trinity.
AHS Football went on the road Friday and lost a close one. After surrendering a 28 yard pass TD on a first down that Asheboro earned only because of a couple of Bulldog mistakes, the ‘Dogs answered with a score of their own, as junior Kaine McClendon, who had a great night at running back, punched it in from just a few yards out. Jaylen Pinkney added a 1 yard TD run and senior quarterback Ander Artis delivered a perfect pass to Ja’Zyion Geiger for a 44 yard TD late in the fourth quarter. After failing to convert a game-tying 2 point conversion after Geiger’s TD, the ‘Dogs quickly forced a 3 and out and drove deep into Asheboro territory before the Blue Comets made a game-winning stop. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday at Trinity.
